Summary

The acclaimed author of Gods of Jade and Shadow returns with a mesmerising feminist re-imagining of Gothic fantasy, in which a young socialite discovers the haunting secrets of a beautiful old mansion in 1950s Mexico。

He is trying to poison me。 You must come for me, Noemi。 You have to save me。

When glamorous socialite Noemi Taboada receives a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging to be rescued from a mysterious doom, it's clear something is desperately amiss。 Catalina has always had a flair for the dramatic, but her claims that her husband is poisoning her and her visions of restless ghosts seem remarkable, even for her。

An interesting read。 Though I’d mostly figured it out halfway through, I needed to know the ending, as I was invested in Noemi。 I’m mostly satisfied with the ending, other than the last two pages。 Worth it。 Definitely。

Great story, and really well written。

The visuals in this book were so vivid and horrifying and after i finished i took a shower and just。。。 thinked>。 This is a horror story that will sit with me for a while for sure。 It is also apparently going to be made into a Hulu series which is exciting but there's one issue。。。 the first 3/4ths of the book drags。 There is enough mystery and intrigue to keep you reading, but honestly the actual horror doesn't begin to occur till like the last 50 pages。。。 there is also too many non con undertone The visuals in this book were so vivid and horrifying and after i finished i took a shower and just。。。 thinked>。 This is a horror story that will sit with me for a while for sure。 It is also apparently going to be made into a Hulu series which is exciting but there's one issue。。。 the first 3/4ths of the book drags。 There is enough mystery and intrigue to keep you reading, but honestly the actual horror doesn't begin to occur till like the last 50 pages。。。 there is also too many non con undertones for my taste。 But it was still a fun read。 。。。more

This was a 2。5 that I rounded up to a 3。 Overall it wasn't bad? I loved the setting。 The creepy house, the atmosphere, the fact that something just wasn't quite right with the Doyles or where they lived。 But ultimately I ended up getting bored due to the pacing。 Which was really disappointing since it has every single element that I love, but still fell flat and I found myself putting the book down over and over instead of being a non-stop read。 It isn't something I'm going to read again, and it This was a 2。5 that I rounded up to a 3。 Overall it wasn't bad? 3。5* I’m not sure what I was truly expecting from this book, but I definitely was expecting something else。 This book has creepy vibes, which I really appreciated。 The details of the setting really helped me picture the scenes of the story vividly in my head。 The pacing was a bit off for me, and the story was just weird to me。 I’m really excited to see this novel became a mini series, it will do great on tv!

Eh… I mean it was ok。 Not amazing。 Not terrible。 I felt like it had a lot of lead up to the big reveal of what was going on in the house but it ended up just being weird to me。 I don’t feel like everything was explained well enough for me to be super invested。

This is a pitch-perfect Gothic horror story。Sometimes a book doesn't need to innovate, add twists, or subvert tropes。 Sometimes it is enough to take a format and just execute it well。 It helps when you pick a format -- the typical Gothic horror story of a woman trapped in a creepy house in the middle of nowhere full of creepy people who clearly aren't what they seem。 (Though Moreno-Garcia does update things a bit by adding in some racism and making the misogyny of the Bad Guys common in Gothic h This is a pitch-perfect Gothic horror story。Sometimes a book doesn't need to innovate, add twists, or subvert tropes。 Sometimes it is enough to take a format and just execute it well。 It helps when you pick a format -- the typical Gothic horror story of a woman trapped in a creepy house in the middle of nowhere full of creepy people who clearly aren't what they seem。 (Though Moreno-Garcia does update things a bit by adding in some racism and making the misogyny of the Bad Guys common in Gothic horror stories more explicit。)After all, nothing in this place was what it seemed。 There were secrets upon secrets。 Set in 1950s Mexico, Noemí Taboada is sent by her father to find out what's wrong with her cousin -- recently married into the Doyle family -- who has sent erratic letters。 We, the reader, immediately know something is off。 Obviously! Since we know we're reading a Gothic horror story。 It's right there in the title! But Noemí doesn't know that。 Yet。 Moreno-Garcia builds up delicious amounts of tension and anxiety。Should have left in the beginning, when the first tingle of disquiet assailed her, but there had been a thrill to it, hadn’t there? A curse, maybe a haunting。 I've seen a few negative reviews say that "nothing happens", which feels like missing the point of a Gothic horror story。 They are all about the slow-burn of anxious ambiance and uncomfortable encounters with the other residents of the house。 They aren't packed with action set-pieces。“What are your thoughts on the intermingling of superior and inferior types?” he asked, ignoring her discomfort。 Much like the recent movie Get Out, Moreno-Garcia adds a dash of racism to a tried and true formula, which works well here。 The Doyle family are English, resettled in Mexico in search of mining riches and they don't try to hide their feelings of superiority over Mexicans like Noemí。One small but welcome update to the formula: sometimes Gothic horror can lean too far into "oh, women are just such hysterical and emotional creatures, there was nothing creepy going on all along, it was just all in their heads。"In Mexican Gothic we're never really in any doubt that something is going on。 We don't know exactly what。 Is it supernatural? Or just garden-variety human terribleness? One could conclude this was a case of three silly, nervous women。 Physicians of old would have diagnosed it as hysterics。 But one thing Noemí was not was hysterical。 。。。more

More like 2。5。 The first half was so so slow, a constant reminder that the main character, Noemi, is a smart socialite and the house is cold, damp, and covered in mold。 It got creepy and weird towards the end。 The plot quickened with the last half。 I can’t say that I was scared but the imagery was disgusting。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I love gothic novels but this do not do it for me at all。 Despite going to the creepy old English manor to check in on her cousin, Noemi would go days without actually trying to see her cousin, instead just wandering around aimlessly。 Which was slightly boring, but I preferred it to the twist, which was convoluted with a bunch of ancestors, gloom and mushrooms, and full of phrases like “Agnes was the gloom and the gloom was Agnes。” I had to force myself to keep picking it up, and I hated how the I love gothic novels but this do not do it for me at all。 Despite going to the creepy old English manor to check in on her cousin, Noemi would go days without actually trying to see her cousin, instead just wandering around aimlessly。 Which was slightly boring, but I preferred it to the twist, which was convoluted with a bunch of ancestors, gloom and mushrooms, and full of phrases like “Agnes was the gloom and the gloom was Agnes。” I had to force myself to keep picking it up, and I hated how the things that were supposed to explain what was happening were dream sequences, which always feels cheap, even if these ended up being more of visions than dreams。 Started strong and felt like it had a lot of potential—the follow through just didn’t do it for me。 。。。more

HONESTLY, TAKES A WHILE TO GET ANYWHERE。Disappointed to be honest。 I was really looking forward to this book and felt let down by the fact that we have a horror that has no action at all until the 2/3rds mark。The final 3rd was good enough to bump up the rating to average。3 Stars xoxo。

Suspense, thriller, mystery—this one has it all! Reading this book made me think a lot about family relationships/roles, as well as what it means to be “strong,” how life adapts (or refuses to adapt), and the way people can get trapped in systems。 A lot to unpack, but Moreno-Garcia does all that while we’re reading a “haunted house” story!

Creepy and also。。。cute?I really liked this book。 It was creepy and mysterious but also, somehow, sweet and romantic。 I’d watch the show or the movie, for sure。 I’ll definitely be reading more from this author。

It was ok。 It took me 65% for it to truly capture me。 I was just reading because I couldn’t figure out what was going on and wanted some things to make sense。

I loved this book。 a horror a la yellow wallpaper never hurt anybody。 the last 50 pages are a fucking wild ride but the eerie buildup is worth it。 also i have a soft spot for pale shy intellectual men being 1000% in love with some vivacious socialite who changes their entire world。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I will start by saying I loved the writing in this book。 I loved the descriptions and the voice of the character。 The book started off quickly to get you into the meat of it and then went really slow until the last 40 pages where it gave you all of the rest of the story。 I was missing the relationship development that I so desperately wanted to any characters other than Francis and Noemie。 It was strange but solid read and I felt the need to finish it so it’s like 3。5 stars for me。

Absolutely loved so many twist and turns and beautifully described emotion。 From love, lust, loneliness and absolutely dreadful anger。 I couldn’t stop reading, feeling all the emotions。
